Chelsea

Are you looking for a town with charm?

Do you appreciate small-town living?

Chelsea is a vibrant small town in Michigan known for treasured historic architecture, appreciation for the arts, and stunning outdoor recreation areas. Chelsea has many accolades that the tight-knit community takes pride in.

Here are a few that are noteworthy:

Pure Michigan Trail Town:

Chelsea is labeled a “Pure Michigan Trail Town” thanks to their lush 25,000 acres housed by Waterloo Recreation Area. Due to these well-maintained acres, it’s also been named one of the top 10 biking cities in Michigan.  In addition to biking, other activities residents enjoy here include hiking, skiing, fishing, golfing…the list goes on! This town appeals to those who pride themselves in practicing healthy living.

Historic Downtown:

Chelsea is named to the National Register of Historic Places due to their beautifully preserved historic downtown architecture. Additionally, their quaint Victorian neighborhoods make it an appealing, walkable area. Another cool historic place is Chelsea Milling Company which has been family owned and operated for over 100 years! It’s where the well-known “Jiffy” brand is manufactured and it’s open to the public for tours.

Dining and Cocktails:

There are plenty of great places in Chelsea to grab a drink with family and friends or a bite to eat. Ugly Dog Distillery is a micro-distillery that manufactures vodka created from 100% Michigan-grown wheat. This local favorite sells bacon-flavored vodka and usually has their fuzzy mascot, Ruger the Dog waiting to greet their customers. For those that enjoy a slice of great pizza and ice-cold beer, Jet’s Pizza Taproom has a sit-down restaurant with over 40 beers on tap to choose from!

A couple other fan favorite restaurants in Chelsea are Common Grill, an upscale American bistro located in a 100-year-old building and The Grateful Cow is a burger and sushi fusion restaurant that serves up fantastic cocktails. There is no shortage of delicious food and drinks in the Chelsea area!

Arts, Culture and Recreation:

The Chelsea community has a great appreciation for the arts. There are plenty of painting and pottery workshops, and community events ranging from chalk art to their annual light pole decorating. Visit downtown to explore the 16-piece rotating sculpture walk.

The Purple Rose Theater founded by Chelsea’s hometown hero, Jeff Daniels is another place art enthusiasts should check out for local productions and events.

Book worms love this town, because Chelsea has a national award-winning library! In 2008, Library Journal announced Chelsea Library as, “The Best Small Library in America.”

There is plenty to do to keep busy in Chelsea, but a couple more fun things to do are swimming and ice-skating! Chelsea has a fantastic community pool, as well as The Chelsea Wellness Center which has a 25-yard lap pool along with a warm water therapy pool. Here you can find lots of great classes! For ice-skaters, the Artic Coliseum Ice Rink is another cool place to check out. Here you can enjoy DJ skating, birthday parties, public skating, lessons and all kinds of fun activities.

Music:

From jazz to karaoke, there’s multiple genres of live music performed in Chelsea every week.

One popular music event in Chelsea is Sounds & Sights which takes place on Thursday nights during the summer. This music series consists of 11 stages performing free music throughout the historic downtown area.
